A hair system is an investment, and like any investment, how you care for it determines how long it pays off. The good news: the routine isn't complicated once you know the basics. Here's where to start.
Washing
Most wearers wash their system every 7–10 days, though this varies with your activity level and how much product you use. Use a sulfate-free shampoo designed for hair systems or gentle, color-treated hair — regular shampoo can be too harsh on the base. Work the shampoo through gently rather than scrubbing, rinse with cool to lukewarm water, and avoid twisting or wringing the hair, which can loosen knots over time.
Drying and Styling
Air drying is always the safest option. If you use heat tools, keep them on a low setting and use a heat protectant, the same as you would with your natural hair. If your system is synthetic, check the manufacturer's heat tolerance first — synthetic fibers can be damaged permanently by tools designed for human hair.
Cleaning the Base
Adhesive residue builds up on the base over time and needs its own gentle cleaning — a dedicated adhesive remover works best, applied with a soft cloth rather than scrubbing directly. Harsh scrubbing is one of the most common ways lace and skin bases get damaged early, so patience here pays off.
Storage Between Wears
When you're not wearing your system, store it on a mannequin head or stand to help it hold its shape, and keep it out of direct sunlight, which can fade color over time. If you're traveling, a breathable storage bag protects the hair without trapping moisture.
Reattachment Schedule
How often you reattach depends on the adhesive or tape you're using — tape generally needs more frequent touch-ups, while liquid adhesive can often go longer between applications. As a general guideline, most wearers reattach every 2–4 weeks, but don't stretch past what your specific adhesive recommends. Wearing a system too long between reattachments is one of the most common causes of premature base wear.
When to See a Professional
If you notice the lace starting to tear, the base losing its shape, or the hairline no longer sitting the way it should, that's the point to get it looked at rather than keep pushing through. If you're in Toronto, Biro Hair Studio offers in-person checks and maintenance. Wherever you are, our team is happy to help troubleshoot over contact — it's usually easier to fix a small issue early than replace a system that wore out ahead of schedule.
